PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County’s Department of Economic Development announced Thursday, July 10, that it had received a Site Characterization Grant through the Maryland Business Ready Sites Program for Patuxent Business Park in Lusby.
The program, established by executive order, “will accelerate the development of shovel-ready sites for business attraction, retention, and growth and private sector investment across the state.”
The grant awarded to Patuxent Business Park provides up to $10,000, matched by local funds, for a total of $20,000. The Calvert funds will come from the Calvert County Economic Development Authority, not the county’s general fund or taxpayer dollars intended for schools, roads and public safety.
The funds will pay for a site characterization study, which the county says is a “planning tool” rather than a construction project. The study will help the county determine the status of the land, what business may be developed there and what has the best chance to succeed, and increase the “site readiness” score to attract high-quality businesses to the park.
Patuxent Business Park is zoned as Light Industrial and Mixed-Use District (I-1), which supports light manufacturing, processing, warehousing and compatible commercial uses. The area does not permit any residential development.
This project adds to the growing list of economic development initiatives in Calvert County, such as the Armory Square project. Officials are optimistic that the projects will attract businesses to the county that drive economic growth and create quality local jobs.
