LA PLATA, Md. — A joint town hall originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, June 24, was postponed after Charles County commissioners determined that not all members would be available to attend. The decision was made during the Board of Commissioners’ morning session on June 24.
Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II opened the discussion by noting that two commissioners would be unable to participate and emphasized the importance of full board representation at public town halls. “The purpose of the joint town halls is to provide an opportunity for our residents to hear directly from the entire Board of Commissioners,” Collins said.
Commissioners unanimously agreed that postponing the meeting was in the best interest of residents. Commissioner Amanda M. Stewart supported the decision, stating, “Our residents really deserve the opportunity to engage with all of the commissioners.” She noted that while scheduling conflicts are sometimes unavoidable, ensuring full participation is critical for meaningful public dialogue.
Board members cited past experiences where the absence of certain commissioners limited engagement from attendees. Some residents have previously expressed disappointment when unable to speak directly with their district representative during these forums.
The board directed staff to coordinate a new date by consulting each commissioner’s office, with the goal of rescheduling the town hall as soon as possible—potentially in July. While no date was finalized during the meeting, staff are expected to circulate availability and announce a new date in the coming weeks.
