Charles County Commissioners Approve Move Toward $38M Blue Crabs Stadium Improvements

LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday, Jan. 6, to authorize a letter requesting financial and construction management assistance from the Maryland Stadium Authority for a proposed $38 million improvement project at Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

The letter, addressed to Maryland Stadium Authority Executive Director Michael J. Frenz, seeks approval for services under the state’s Sports Entertainment Facilities Program, authorized through Chapter 61 (House Bill 897) of the Maryland Acts of 2022.

During the afternoon session, Jake Dyer, director of the Department of Fiscal and Administrative Services, told commissioners that county staff and the Blue Crabs have worked with the Maryland Stadium Authority since 2023 on a previously approved preliminary and design analysis for upgrades to the stadium. That analysis is now complete.

Dyer emphasized that the proposed improvements would not be funded with county dollars.

“This is not county funding,” Dyer said. “The request before you today is simply to authorize the letter so the Maryland Stadium Authority can move forward with the next phase of the project.”

According to the letter, the analysis determined that making improvements to the baseball field and constructing a new clubhouse and training facility at Regency Furniture Stadium represents the most advantageous option for both Charles County and the Blue Crabs.

Regency Furniture Stadium, located at 11765 St. Linus Drive in Waldorf, is owned by Charles County and operated under a long-term concession and lease agreement with the Blue Crabs, a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Inc., which is affiliated with Major League Baseball through the MLB Partner League program.

The stadium opened in 2008 and requires capital improvements to meet current Atlantic League and professional development league facility standards for continued safe operation.

  1. Just keeping wasting our tax payers dollars what happens to the admissions fees to pay for this stadium not even under a ch. co. Business name furniture store out of p.g. Co. You screw CHANEY ON THE BID

    1. Attendance has been so low for so long for so many reasons. The price of admission is not enough to sustain the grounds and buildings after 18 years. Its been so bad for so long it’s time. The concession prices are ridiculous, especially for families. Having been season ticket holders from the beginning, I remember the meet and greet with Brooksie, Peanut Johnson, and others. There were big names on the field and visitors. So many events for kids. We have such a huge little league and high school team presence in Charles County not to mention surrounding counties that can benefit through partnership with this organization. These kids are the future of baseball. Somehow the outreach has stopped cold. We are now season Senior Slugger ticket holders and enjoy the games, (but do wish there were more wins)…but such is any sport. We were sent a survey to complete as to what we wanted to see done. I am so glad we now have new leadership for our team and the organization. Hopefully we can bring back the magic of Blue Crabs Baseball.

  2. Look at the people blue crabs will be losers save money bull doze the stadium down THANK YOU
