GREAT MILLS, Md. — Zachary Alan Kiger, 36, who is currently listed as having no fixed address, faces drug charges after deputies reportedly discovered crack cocaine paraphernalia during a routine traffic stop in Great Mills.
According to court documents filed by Deputy Tyler Westphal of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on March 18, when a 2014 Ford Taurus was observed committing multiple traffic violations near the Quik Shop at 21265 Great Mills Road. Violations included failing to stop when exiting a private driveway, running a stop sign, and disregarding a flashing red traffic signal.
During the subsequent traffic stop, Kiger, seated in the vehicle’s rear driver’s-side passenger seat, appeared to deputies to be concealing something in his left pocket. When deputies ordered Kiger to exit the vehicle, he spontaneously informed them he possessed drug paraphernalia—a glass smoking device commonly used to ingest crack cocaine, according to Deputy Westphal.
Deputies recovered the broken glass pipe from Kiger’s pocket, noting it contained burnt residue that tested positive for cocaine, a Schedule II controlled substance.
Kiger was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) other than cannabis, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine. He also faces a charge of possession of CDS paraphernalia, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $500 fine.
Following his arrest, Kiger appeared for an initial hearing and was released after posting an unsecured personal bond of $2,500. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 29 at St. Mary’s District Court.
