PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Do you want your kids to fall in love with reading? Calvert High School, located at 600 Dares Beach Road, is inviting families to join in on a night of fun that will help foster a love of reading for people of all ages. Organizers say the event is a can’t-miss and it will “inspire young readers.”
The event will be held at Calvert High on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will include interactive games and stations, food trucks and free books and prizes for all attendees. Registration is not required but is encouraged to help organizers get a sense of the skills and interests of the kids attending.
Fall in Love With Reading is one of several events happening across Calvert schools at the start of the new school year. The district’s social media shows a slew of events, ranging from family-friendly activities like this one to college fairs and financial aid seminars.
Fall is also a popular time for book- and literary-centered events. The cozy feel of fall combined with back-to-school spirit makes it the perfect time to lean into, or discover, a love of books and reading. The season is filled with reading and writing-related holidays and activities: September is National Literacy Month, October is National Book Month and November is National Novel Writing Month. Events are happening all over the state and in D.C. to get kids — and adults — excited about reading.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has long recommended reading out loud with kids daily. Research has shown that reading together helps with cognitive development, early literacy skills and improves parent-child relationships. Southern Maryland’s libraries also encourage families to read together with their “500 by Five” initiative.
