LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Smiles, excitement and armfuls of dresses filled Tolerance Hall at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds this weekend as two local organizations joined forces to help women and students step into special moments with confidence.

The Cinderella Society and My Sister’s Closet collaborated March 14-15 for a two-day clothing giveaway event, welcoming community members to browse hundreds of donated prom gowns, professional outfits, shoes and accessories, all completely free. By the end of the event, many attendees left with full bags and bright smiles after finding the perfect outfit for prom, work or an upcoming milestone. This marks the 4th annual event for Cinderella Society!

The event combined the missions of both groups: the Cinderella Society’s effort to ensure every student can attend prom regardless of cost and My Sister’s Closet’s initiative to provide professional attire for women entering or reentering the workforce. Together, the organizations transformed the fairgrounds venue into a welcoming boutique-like space focused on confidence, opportunity and community support.

Throughout the weekend, racks of gowns and tables of shoes were quickly explored by attendees eager to find their perfect look. Many students searching for prom attire were able to complete an entire ensemble; dress, shoes and accessories, while women browsing My Sister’s Closet’s selection discovered business outfits designed to help them take the next step in their careers.

Community generosity played a major role in the event’s success. The BayNet attended the event on the last day and organizers said they had “an overwhelming number of donations,” resulting in an impressive selection of formalwear and professional clothing available to those who attended.

Preparing for the event was no small feat. Volunteers worked tirelessly as a 20-foot truck made two trips to the fairgrounds to unload the impressive volume of donated dresses, shoes and clothing that would soon line the racks.

Both organizations shared Facebook reels on opening day to show their setup of donations. You can watch My Sister’s Closet here and Cinderella Society’s reel here.

One of the most appreciated services offered during the event came from two volunteer seamstresses who provided on-site alterations at no cost. Minor adjustments allowed several attendees to walk out with dresses tailored to fit them perfectly, adding an extra touch of confidence for upcoming events.

Adding to the excitement, Miss St. Mary’s County also attended the event, modeling one of the dresses and helping showcase the wide variety of styles available for students searching for their perfect prom look.

Guests were also able to enjoy refreshments provided by Savvy Sips while they shopped, creating a relaxed and celebratory atmosphere throughout the hall.

Organizers from My Sister’s Closet shared in a recent Facebook post that the impact of the event extended far beyond clothing.

“Yesterday was a huge success! We heard from so many people about what a gift this event was,” Melisa Rodriguez, the founder of My Sister’s Closet, shared in a social media post following opening day.

“We spoke to and served women from all walks of life: college students leaving home, women that had to go back to the office after years of working from home, women who got a new job, women who got their first job, women who recently lost or gained weight, women who wanted new church clothes or a wardrobe refresh and more.”

St. Mary’s County Commissioner Eric Colvin also commented, stating, “Congratulations! This is so wonderful! So much hard work went into serving our community through this … thank you!”

The Cinderella Society thanked Elks Lodge in a recent Facebook reel showcasing their event.

“A huge thank you to Elks Lodge, shopping with a budget and not my own personal debit card was the most amazing thing!” Brittany Gill (Cinderella Society co-founder) said.

Katrina Cropp (Cinderella Society co-founder) stated, “I’m so thankful to our community to continue to show up for us like this,” noting that many people even purchased dresses for the event as a donation.

Other community members pitched in as well. Ribshot Tattoos made a donation filled with random essentials such as headbands, beauty sponges, press-on nails and much more.

The Cinderella Society began as a grassroots effort to help local students afford prom attire and has grown into a community-driven nonprofit dedicated to providing free formalwear for milestone events. My Sister’s Closet launched earlier this year with a mission to help women overcome barriers to employment by providing professional clothing and support resources.

With strong community support, organizers say the collaboration demonstrated just how powerful local partnerships can be, turning donated dresses and clothing into confidence, opportunity and unforgettable moments for those who need them most.

As the racks began to empty and attendees left carrying carefully chosen outfits, the weekend proved to be more than just a clothing giveaway. For many in Southern Maryland, it was a reminder that when a community comes together, it can help create a little magic.
