PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — An inmate at the Calvert County Detention Center is facing additional charges after allegedly spitting on a correctional officer.
According to charging documents, on Feb. 22, 2025, at approximately 11:35 p.m., authorities were serving paperwork on Calvin Wayne Blackwell, 43, when they were informed that he had assaulted a detention center deputy by spitting through the crack of his cell door.
The deputy was speaking with another inmate in Block L when Blackwell allegedly launched saliva through the gap of his cell door, striking the deputy’s hand.
Court records indicate that Blackwell had previously engaged in a similar incident, spitting on another deputy before the most recent attack. The entire encounter was captured on the deputy’s agency-issued body-worn camera.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Blackwell has been charged with second-degree assault on a correctional employee, a misdemeanor offense under Maryland law that carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine if convicted.
Following his latest offense, Blackwell was held without bond after a bail review hearing on Feb. 24, 2025, before Judge Michelle R. Saunders in Calvert County District Court.
