Judge Denies Sentence Reduction For Calvert Man Convicted In Wife’s 2018 Murder
James and Tanya Harley

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. James Walter Harley, Jr., convicted of first degree premeditated murder in Calvert County in 2018, has lost his bid to have his sentence reduced.

Circuit Court Judge Mark S. Chandlee denied Harley’s motion for reconsideration of sentence on January 26, 2024, stating that he has “serious concerns for the safety and wellbeing of the community” should Harley be released.

Harley was convicted of the shooting death of his wife inside the family home in Lusby. The
shooting was witnessed by Harley’s 8-year-old son. Harley fled the scene on foot. The child
was found wandering through the neighborhood by nearby residents.

Harley is serving a life sentence at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland. North Branch is a maximum security facility.

This case was prosecuted by Calvert County State’s Attorney Robert Harvey.

  1. He should be in there for the rest of his life, after all he took his wife’s life. Although our tax dollars are paying for him to watch t.v, eat 3 meals a day and whatever else. She doesn’t have that choice, so maybe someone should follow the saying “do unto others as you would want done to you” there ya go problem solved. No tax dollars wasted! She don’t get to see the light of day again, watch t.v, be with her kids eat etc. Why should he?

    1. They weren’t even together anymore and he abused her what are you even talking about?? And cheating means you kill your kids mother with your child in the house?? A month before Mother’s Day and two months before your child’s huh school graduation BFFR!! I wasn’t surprised he did this at all I could see the pain her eyes every time he posted one of those “family photos” on FB!!

  2. GOOD!!!! These defendants always wanna claim they’re remorseful but then wanna avoid doing their time. Chandlee is a very fair judge but he doesn’t deserve to get out early at all. He was lucky to even receive a chance at parole! How selfish to leave your kids scarred like that because you couldn’t let go. Yet was writing live letters to other women from county jail..please. I hope her family shows up in numbers at his parole hearing.

  3. I can’t believe someone would write she was cheating. He was cheating! She was trying to move on and he couldn’t take it!!! People are still fooled by this man even until today! He took her life and at no point did she deserve that! He was writing love letters to women in jail!! Where is his remorse! He fooled many! For anyone that can justify what he did is sick!!! I am so glad that the judge saw through him! Many people still praise this clown but don’t even speak on her! Her name is TANYA! She didn’t deserve to DIE!!
