ANNAPOLIS – The Maryland Commission on Climate Change (MCCC) is proud to announce the fourth annual Maryland Climate Teach-In. The Maryland Climate Teach-In is an annual statewide celebration of climate change literacy and learning focused on climate change education and solutions. The Maryland Climate Teach-in takes place throughout the month of April.
April is a special month for climate education. Governor Wes Moore has proclaimed April as Maryland Climate Education Month! April is also Earth Month, including Earth Day on April 22.
The Maryland Climate Teach-In has grown substantially since its inception in 2023 and is on track to set another record for total climate education events registered in 2026. Participants in the initiative are from all ages and backgrounds, including public and private K-12 schools, higher education, government agencies, non-profits, faith communities, and more across the entire state of Maryland.
“The Maryland Climate Teach-In is growing every year, because our teachers and students understand that climate change deserves action,” said MCCC Chair and Secretary of the Environment Serena McIlwain. “We love helping educators inspire students to make a difference and embrace their roles as environmental stewards.”
The Maryland Climate Teach-In is not a single event but is an initiative that supports climate education activities of all kinds for all ages. Every year, the MCCC selects an Educator Spokesperson who champions the initiative and hosts an in-person Climate Change Education Summit at their respective schools. The MCCC is delighted to feature Ms. Vicki Mathew, Biology teacher at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, as our official 2026 Educator Spokesperson.
Baltimore Polytechnic Institute is hosting the Teach-In’s annual Climate Change Education Summit on April 15. Student green leaders at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute took ownership of designing and coordinating the Summit and prepared an exciting day of student- and expert-led climate change activities and seminars along the theme, “STEM without the environment is incomplete.”
Student leadership is at the forefront of the April 15 Summit. “Climate education becomes powerful when it’s rooted in students’ own communities – they begin to see themes as scientists, problem solvers, and environmental stewards,” said 2026 Spokesperson Vicki Mathew.
The MCCC encourages educators from all levels, institutions and community
organizations to register and take part in this impactful event. Participation details and resources are available on the Maryland Climate Teach-In website.
