MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — An 11-year-old Mechanicsville boy is inspiring his community as he races against time to experience the world before a rare genetic disorder takes his sight.

Henry Dotson was recently diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a fast-progressing condition that causes gradual vision loss. For Henry, the disease has advanced quickly, already limiting much of his vision and forcing him to adapt to challenges most children never face.

The disorder has significantly impacted his daily life, particularly in low-light settings. Activities like trick-or-treating, evening events and even watching fireworks have become difficult or impossible as his night and peripheral vision continue to decline.

Despite the diagnosis, Henry has approached the future with determination, beginning mobility training and learning to use a white cane. He is also learning Braille to prepare for the possibility of severe vision loss.

As he adjusts, Henry and his family have created a “visual bucket list” — a collection of experiences he hopes to see while he still can.

The list includes seeing the Northern Lights, visiting the Grand Canyon, exploring wildlife in places like Canada and Australia, and taking an Alaskan cruise. He also hopes to attend live sports events, experience the vibrant fall colors of New England and visit Star Wars-themed attractions, a shared passion with his father.

The effort has drawn strong community support. A GoFundMe campaign created to help fund Henry’s experiences has raised more than $11,000, with donations helping cover travel, lodging and access to the destinations and activities on his list.

Family members say the goal is to give Henry the chance to experience as much of the world’s beauty and excitement as possible while he still has vision, creating lasting memories he can carry with him for the rest of his life.
