NORTH BEACH, Md. — Starting June 23, the North Beach pier will be undergoing a redecking project that will temporarily restrict pier access for about eight weeks.

The redecking will replace aging deck boards on the pier in what the town of North Beach calls a “critical” project to enhance safety and ensure longevity. The current 2-by-8 boards will be replaced by new boards of the same color and material, so residents won’t see any visible change to the pier they know and love.

Officials designed the project to have minimal disruption to residents and visitors over the eight-week period. The redecking crews will work from Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in one section at a time. The work areas will be clearly marked so people can use the rest of the pier while the work is being carried out. This plan also allows for full pier access during busy weekends, and the town assured residents that the pier will be fully accessible for the July 4 fireworks and celebrations.

And while fishing off the pier may be mildly impacted during the project, officials don’t anticipate any loss of revenue or impact to local businesses or the beach during this time.

A representative for North Beach said in an emailed statement that the pier redecking project has been on the Town Council’s radar for “a long time.” As the old boards were fast becoming a tripping hazard, the council moved forward with a public invitation to bid on April 14, 2025, and moved the project along in the interest of public safety. Funding for the project will come from the 2025 capital improvements fund.

In their FAQ, the town of North Beach explained the careful planning behind the project to ensure minimal disruption during the construction period. Officials encourage North Beach residents and visitors to check the town’s Facebook page for weekly updates if you plan to use the pier during this time.
