INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A Bryans Road woman has been charged with drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia following a traffic stop and brief pursuit in Charles County, according to court records.

Ami Elizabeth Clagett, 52, of Bryans Road, was arrested Jan. 30 after deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle connected to a reported stolen registration tag.

According to the statement of probable cause, deputies observed a blue Chevrolet SUV in the area of Hawthorne Road and Livingston Road that matched the description of a vehicle associated with a previously reported stolen Washington, D.C. registration tag. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle fled, leading deputies on a short pursuit.

The vehicle eventually stopped at the end of Ford Drive, where the driver exited and ran into nearby woods. The driver was later detained. Clagett, who was seated in the passenger seat, remained at the scene and was taken into custody.

Deputies reported observing a small white rock-like substance in plain view near Clagett’s seat that appeared consistent with crack cocaine. Officers also noted a knotted piece of plastic torn from a small bag on the driver’s side door. Clagett was searched, and deputies recovered a small red plastic capsule containing white powder residue from her left jacket pocket. A folded paper towel containing a crushed white substance was also located.

A field test conducted on the crushed substance returned a positive result for crack cocaine, a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance. Court documents further state that while being transported, Clagett informed officers she had a glass crack pipe concealed on her person. The pipe was recovered prior to her arrival at the detention center.

Clagett was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance not including cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanor offenses under Maryland law.

Court records show Clagett was released the same day on a $750 unsecured personal bond.

A trial is scheduled for March 17 in Charles District Court.
