NOTE: The Maryland Senate Republican Caucus shared the following press release:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Governor Moore’s announcement today of a so-called Redistricting Advisory Commission is nothing more than an attempt to wipe out the Republican Party in Maryland and further consolidate one-party control.

It is an insult to every Marylander who still believes that democracy depends on competition, fairness, and representation for all voices—not just those that agree with the Governor.

“Instead of restoring integrity to the process, Governor Moore has chosen to rig the system,” said Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey. “This is a partisan power grab disguised as reform, designed to silence dissent and cement one-party rule in Maryland.”

Maryland already holds the shameful distinction of being the second most gerrymandered state in the nation. For Governor Moore—who campaigned on a promise to “leave no one behind”—to now use that slogan as cover for erasing Republican representation in Congress is the height of hypocrisy. How does he define “fair maps”—a map without a single Republican?

“This is not a commission for fairness—it’s a commission for control,” Hershey continued. “It’s designed to suppress competition and protect entrenched political power. The Governor’s appointments make that clear, as he once again turns to partisan loyalists rather than neutral arbiters of fairness.”

Senator Angela Alsobrooks should also be ashamed. As Maryland’s junior U.S. Senator, she should be in Washington doing her job—working to reopen the federal government and serve the people she was elected to represent—instead of spending her time leading a political commission to cement Democratic dominance. Her priorities could not be clearer, nor more misplaced.

“It takes real arrogance to spout inaccurate talking points about threats to democracy for weeks and then announce a commission stocked with Democratic Party loyalists whose sole aim is to erase the only remaining Republican voice in Maryland’s congressional delegation,” said Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready. “While the Governor plays D.C. politics, his own administration is in disarray—multiple cabinet secretaries have departed, state audits have revealed deep mismanagement, and Marylanders are left without real leadership. Instead of focusing on fixing government, he’s focused on rigging elections.”

    1. Yeah, or Illinois, Minnesota, New York or California.
Take a look at the current Maryland gerrymandering and see where Spendy Hoyer’s district trickles from So. Md. and winds its way on up through certain populated areas east and north of D.C.

Why should Alsobrooks be in DC when the government is shut down? The House and Senate are closed until Trump commands the Republican majority to end the shutdown.
