OWINGS, Md. — Two people were hospitalized Monday evening after a black Mercedes-Benz sedan crashed into a utility pole in Owings, splitting the pole in half.

The single-vehicle collision occurred just after 5:00 p.m. on May 5, 2025, along the southbound side of Southern Maryland Boulevard (Route 4) at Mt. Harmony Road. Emergency crews arriving on the scene found the vehicle off the roadway with extensive damage. The utility pole it struck had been sheared in two.

According to first responders, both occupants had exited the car by the time help arrived. Medics evaluated the individuals on scene and transported them to a local hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The incident briefly disrupted traffic as emergency and utility crews worked to secure the area and assess infrastructure damage.

  1. This is the 4th utility pole wiped out in this same yard/property in the past 15-16 years by vehicle accident. That’s not including as many or more utility poles wiped out by vehicles directly (catty corner) across the Rt 4 on the northbound lanes just 50 feet or so North of Mt Harmony Rd entrance in the same timeframe.
