PORT REPUBLIC, Md. — If you’ve ever wondered why your sourdough starter won’t seem to, well, start, this bakery has the perfect workshop for you.

The Sweet Little Shop at 2990 Parkers Creek Road, Port Republic, is hosting a Sourdough Basics 101 Workshop on Sunday, April 12, along with A Love for Sourdough. Michana, the owner and baker at A Love for Sourdough, will teach the workshop. All supplies will be provided for the event, and you’ll leave with your own starter, a bowl to transport your dough home and a fresh-baked loaf to take home to enjoy with family and friends. Bakers will also get a PDF guide showing how to bake sourdough step by step.

Event organizers advise that anyone participating should come in clothes they won’t mind getting messy. Light refreshments will be served, as well as samples of different sourdough breads.

The Sweet Little Shop is a gift shop and artisan shop filled with items created by passionate local vendors. The shop sells candles, home decor, jewelry, sweet treats, flowers and more, in its mission to celebrate local creativity.

Sourdough is a popular type of bread that’s popular among bakers and bread lovers because of its long fermentation process. Sourdough has a unique flavor and tends to last a little longer due to the complexity of the dough. It’s also easier to digest and has a lower glycemic index than other breads.

And for bakers, sourdough has basically taken on a life of its own. This bread is the bread that shows how well you understand bread — and you have the chance to learn to create the perfect loaf.
