CALIFORNIA, Md. — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of southern Maryland and central and northern Virginia, warning of hazardous travel conditions as a mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow moves into the region Wednesday night, February 5, 2025.
The advisory, in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday, warns of up to an inch of sleet accumulation and as much as one-tenth of an inch of ice. Forecasters say the precipitation will begin as a light mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain before transitioning to steady freezing rain overnight. By Thursday morning, temperatures are expected to rise, turning the wintry mix into rain.
Commuters are urged to prepare for slippery roads and hazardous driving conditions, particularly during the Thursday morning rush. Transportation officials are advising motorists to use caution, as untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may become icy.
Local emergency management agencies are monitoring the storm and encouraging residents to check for updates and prepare for possible delays. Schools and businesses may experience disruptions if icy conditions persist.
The winter weather system comes amid an active season of temperature swings and storm activity in the Mid-Atlantic. The advisory is expected to expire by mid-morning Thursday as the system moves out of the area.
