SOUTHERN MARYLAND — December weekends are anything but quiet across Southern Maryland, as families continue to fill their calendars with holiday traditions, live music, light displays, and hometown events. Even with snow and slush rolling through the region, the festive events spirit held strong — offering something for every age and interest. Don’t miss the fun — plan ahead with The BayNet’s holiday guides and event calendar.
In Charles County, the Kris Kringle Market helped cap off the year with fireworks and festive performances from the Charles County Youth Orchestra (CCYO). The longtime local tradition drew big crowds once again, with families exploring rows of holiday vendors, enjoying handmade gifts and seasonal treats, and catching up with neighbors. It’s the kind of event folks look forward to every year. The Grinch was spotted sneaking around a corner — but judging by the smiles, his heart might’ve grown three sizes.

Music also took center stage last weekend as Cosmic Symphony presented two free holiday concerts — one in Calvert County and one in St. Mary’s — drawing full audiences and big community support. This year’s program included a collaboration with St. Maries Choral Arts, featuring both St. Maries Chorale and St. Maries Musica. One highlight of the night came during a creative, laugh-out-loud version of The 12 Days of Christmas, arranged in the style of Straight No Chaser. The performance featured a mashup of unexpected melodies — including a surprise twist with Christmas in Africa, cleverly blended with the iconic sound of Toto’s Africa. The audience laughed, clapped, and sang along, turning the moment into an instant local favorite. From Carol of the Bells to O Holy Night, the evening was packed with both classic carols and joyful surprises.

For those looking to do something a little different, a trip to Washington, D.C., delivered big smiles. Families who visited the Smithsonian’s Season’s Greetings: Dino-Mite! holiday display left with plenty to talk about, combining garden lights with towering prehistoric scenes and trains. It was a fun break from the usual holiday routine — and a great way to make new memories.

Holiday shopping is also front and center as Christmas gets closer. From stocking stuffers and handmade goods to specialty foods and local treats, shopping continues. Gift cards are an easy favorite for coffee lovers, foodies and anyone who enjoys supporting local businesses.
Looking ahead, there’s more to enjoy. You’ll have two chances to see the Clydesdales this week — once in St. Mary’s County and again in Calvert County. The weekend is shaping up to be packed with local fun, so plan ahead with the guides below and enjoy the season with your family, friends, and neighbors.
