
HOLLYWOOD, Md. — The pilot killed in a small aircraft crash Saturday morning in St. Mary’s County has been identified.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m. on February 28, 2026, emergency responders received a report of a possible aircraft crash in the area of Dorsey Park in Hollywood. First responders, including troopers from the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, and local EMS personnel, responded to the area.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command assisted in the search, and the aircraft was ultimately located in a wooded area.
Authorities confirmed the aircraft was a small ultralight. For reasons that remain under investigation, the plane crashed in the wooded area.
The operator and sole occupant of the aircraft was identified as Andrew Mechling, 74, of Tall Timbers. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
